Eighty-Eight

It All Ends

“We surrender our fight, but don’t give ourselves up.”
“And you expect us to...believe you?” Heero replied, calm sarcasm in his voice.
Nikol laughed emptily, “We’ve dispersed our army. We’re leaving.”
      We all stood there, staring.
He started pushing buttons, “I’ll send you our information.”
I stepped forward, “What are you thinking?”
His face fell, “Nikki, just drop it. We’re done. We’re leaving.”
      The line went blank.

Nikki gave me a mock irritated look, “I’m gonna hang him. I’m gonna wrap that braid of his around his neck and hang him from a tree.”
Duo was smirking as she took a drink from her fountain drink, “Then I’d be hung.”
I chuckled a little as Nikki nearly spit out her soda, “And it’ll probably be the only time you can say it, too.”
Duo turned on me, eyes wide as Nikki really did spit out her soda.
Duo had composed himself and lay a hand consolingly on my shoulder, “I know that you like me...” he muttered, “But just because you’re upset with me...‘cause I like girls...doesn’t mean you should put me down at every chance...”
      Nikki was laughing even harder.
I lay my hand on Duo’s, “But, Duo...” I protested.
Nikki had tears streaming down her cheeks, she was laughing so hard.
The laughter spread after Nikki told Sam...gesturing at me with her cup...the ring on her finger catching my attention for a second...I’d had no idea that image would stick...I was confused a second...
Duo was muttering something about friendly fire...
Kris crossed the room to be in my face, “You know I don’t trust you, Heero Yuy.”
I leaned against the door a bit as I nodded, not intimidated, “I’m aware.” I agreed, “And some day I’ll prove to you that I’m trustworthy.”
She snorted a bit, “We’ll see...”
Nikki was smiling as she stepped in, looking like she had a full night’s sleep.
I sighed as I stood and leaned against the back of the chair.
“You called?” she asked with laughter in her eyes.
      “I’m leaving.” I informed her.
She stepped back from the door and waited expectantly, “Lead on, then.”
      She didn’t get it.
      I shook my head, “Alone.”
She frowned a bit, looking like she expected a joke, “Where do you go that I can’t, Jackass?”
I sighed, “Nikki, you don’t understand. I’m leaving this colony.”
She looked like she hoped she’d misunderstood, “What?” the laughter of her eyes was starting to fade.
“I’m heading to X.1.8. They have Relena...”
I felt a little irritated, Nikki’d been p.m.s.-ing all day and now...
      “Whatever.” I muttered, slouching back.
“Yay!” she said with mock enthusiasm, clapping her hands in that same way.
I rose an eyebrow at her.
She smiled wanly, “Sorry, I’ve been annoyed all day...”
      “I hadn’t noticed.” I informed her dryly.
She sighed, climbing into my lap and curling against me. Then situated herself so her head was over my heart.
I gave up, wrapping my arms around her...
Sam waved her perfume under my nose, waiting for my reaction.
I thought about it, heady and smooth, rich and dark, flowery and sweet...in some ways it fit her, while in others it fit Nikki...and in still others Kris...
She laughed delightedly and pointed to her vanity.
On it were two bottles of perfume, both lids off...and a funnel as well.
      I blinked.
She laughed again, kissing me on the cheek, “You’re such a nice boy...”
Trowa tossed me some keys, “The spider...” he pointed at the sleek, dark gray, vet looking car.
I nodded and he grinned a bit.
Quatre came out of the building, his eyes focused passed me, a grin on his face.
      I turned to look.
Duo was coming up the lot with the girls around him...I wondered where Kitty was, then there was confusion... “Who’s Kitty?” I asked.
They ignored me completely, as if I hadn’t spoken.
“Are they always with you?” Quatre demanded, still grinning.
I gave him a look, “You’re kidding, right?”
He focused on me a moment, but was distracted as they all laughed, “Well...” he muttered, not looking at me.
I laughed before he could go on, “...of course they are...”
There was a flash and the little girl was handing me the flower...then I was watching the ocean, then Nikki was with me as we stood on the balcony of St. Gabriel and Relena handed me that invitation...Nikki ripped it right in front of her face, then laughed and asked when the party was...Kris was smacking me for no reason as she passed in the hall of Quatre’s...
I was watching the rain from the window of my suite at Relena’s. I was crying again, but wondering about Nikki and the others as well. The door opened and Duo came in, his hair swinging as she shut it...why was it unbraided?
“What’s up, Chico?” he asked happily.
I smiled slightly at him, “Nothing, you?”
He shrugged, sitting next to me on the window seat with flop, “You’re cheery little girlfriend is about to drive me insane.”
      I grinned at him.
      He smiled, “Nikki called again.”
I felt like the bottom’d dropped out.
I was walking down a long hall, bored out of my mind. It was interesting though, in a way...filled with all sorts of things from the late nineteen hundreds. Nikki would hate me for this, but it was really her own fault. She shouldn’t have pissed me off...
I wasn’t sure who it was...Nikki...Sam...Relena...god only knew wich of the girls...one, and all, at the same time...we were walking down the beach...Which beach was beyond me, but we were enjoying ourselves...
Nikol was staring at me...just staring...Nikki grabbed my arm and urged me away as Nikol lifted an arm...
      “Heero!”
I snapped awake, immedietly remembering where we were.
Nikki was holding two one liters of pepsi and a bag from a fast food joint, “Food.” she informed me.
I smiled at her, sitting up and looking around.
She handed me one of the bottles and tossed the bag into my lap, then collapsed beside me onto the bed, setting her own soda on the nightstand.
“Is it real?” she asked after a long silence.
      “Which?”
She sighed, “Did we really win?”
I sighed as well, “I don’t know. They retreated and left it at that.”
She closed her eyes, “I hope they just leave us alone.”
I closed my eyes, “I think that’s too much to hope for.”
Neither of us said anything as I opened the bag and took out my food.
There was nothing else to say.
