Sixty-Three

Assumptions

“I can’t believe you just took off like that...” Nikki was pissed. “Why didn’t you wait?”
I sighed, “Don’t worry, I can handle this.”
“I don’t care if you think you can handle it or not. I’m trying to get past the whole waking up and you’re gone bit. What the fuck were you thinking?”
I had known how she’d react...so I’d gotten up without waking her and left to do this one myself. I didn’t need help.
      “Nikki...”
      “Heero...”
“Stop bickering, you two.” Sally’s voice came on. “I’m disappointed in you, Heero. Nikki has a point. Now how much longer and do you want back-up?”
I sighed, “About five minutes, and I’m good.”
      Nikki made a disgusted noise.
      “I’ve got your disk, Omaesan...”
That was to try to appease her.
“You also took off without saying anything to me...”
I sighed, I’d hoped she would be more understanding than this...
“What if you died? Huh? What if that was the base and your ass got caught with no back up and nobody knew where you’d gone? Huh? What would I do then?”
      “Wufei knows...”
      “Wufei...”
Oops, he’d be hearing about this too...
      “Thanks, Heero.” Wufei muttered dryly.
      “I can’t believe...”
“I’m going to turn my radio off.”
      “Fat-chance, Asshole...”
I flinched at that...this was worse than I’d thought.
“You think I didn’t fix them to my own specifications? I can’t believe you just left like that...”
She evidently wasn’t thinking. I didn’t mean that in a bad way, and felt bad for even thinking it myself. She knew I could get around something like that.
I knew she was more hurt than pissed, though...with every right to both.
I should have woken her up...at least that way she would have had her piece before I left...I’d probably have someone else with me...but that would probably be better than her being pissed at me like she was...
      “I’m sorry...”
“You seem to say that fairly often, Ai.”
I flinched at that as well.
“Get your ass home. We’re not done.”
      She wouldn’t say anything else.
“She took it off.” Wufei informed me. “She’s really pissed...I didn’t think she’d be that upset over it...”
“Me neither...can you tell her I’m starting home now?”
“If she’ll listen to me...God...I’m going to be hearing about this one for a while now too...”
“I’m sorry...I didn’t intend to piss her off like that...if it were like before...on the colony, then she would have been more understanding...”
“If.” he said pointedly, “Before you two got together. You really should take things like that into consideration, Buddy.”
I sighed, “I know now...I guess I just have to learn from experience...”
“Yeah...well...time to go face the storm...” there was silence a while, “Nikki?”
I couldn’t make out what she said to him, but he had a slight intake of breath.
This base was basically empty too...I’d scanned it before going in. There weren’t extensive locks on any systems, and I hadn’t seen a single soul the entire time.
Wufei ended up either taking off the radio, or turning it off...I wasn’t sure which.
When I got back they were in the room.
Nikki was in his face, yelling.
Sally, Quatre, and Trowa were standing at the door, watching the spectacle... probably ready to stop any violence that might erupt...they both had a tendency in that direction, so put’em together...
No one else was really paying attention, but the TV was loud.
Wufei looked about as pissed as Nikki and was yelling back.
The main gist being ‘Why did you let him go alone.’ to ‘He told me to stay and he knows what he’s doing.’ mixed with ‘respect’ and ‘disrespect’ and a few ‘asshole’s’ for good measure...
      I felt really bad.
After a moment she realized I was there and turned to me, “I’m glad you made it home, Angel.” her teeth were clenched.
      “Nikki...”
Wufei turned to me, giving me a look, then headed to the door.
“Where are you going? We need to talk.” she said coldly, implying me, him, and herself.
He turned and looked at her, “What could I possibly add to that conversation?”
“You could try explaining to me why you let him go alone...”
He shook his head, looking at me, “He knows what he’s doing. If he says he can do it himself, he can.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me when I asked where he’d gone?”
Which was a point...he’d either lied to her or avoided the subject with her.
Her voice sounded hurt...Which probably meant that he’d avoided it...and from her outraged tone when I’d gotten ahold of her, he’d managed to avoid it until that point.
“Nikki...I told him not to tell you.”
Her eyes were full as she looked at me, “Why?”
“Because I didn’t want you to worry...”
She gave me a look, “You didn’t want me to worry, but I woke up and you were gone? No note, nothing? What was I supposed to think?”
“Well, if you hadn’t woken up so early, I’d have come back with a soda for you...”
“I wouldn’t have woken up so early if I hadn’t been alone in the bed.”
Wufei had backed up to the door and now paused.
I gestured for him to go.
He did so, shutting the door quietly.
“How could you just leave like that?” she asked, her eyes about to overflow.
It took a while, but I finally got her calmed down...
“I really needed to go apologize to Wufei.” I muttered finally.
She nodded, curling up. She was laying on the bed. I ran my fingers through her hair and stood, watching her as I went.
He was leaning against the counter in the kitchen, his expression dark.
Everyone else seemed to have disappeared.
      “I’m sorry about that.”
He nodded, “That was just what I needed, to go in there and have a cup thrown at my head. That made my day...”
      I was shocked, “What?”
He nodded, “Yeah. There’s shards of glass in there by the door, I’m surprised you didn’t notice.”
I looked away, I hadn’t even seen them...that explained the people in the hall...
“Oh, and then the whole; it’ll be your fault if he dies...”
      I met his eyes again.
“Yeah. That was fun. I always love arguing with my friends...being told it’s my fault if one of them dies,” he shook his head, “Having her in my face and yelling at me.”
“She was upset with me...I shouldn’t have put you in that position...”
“Oh, and here’s the kicker,” he extended one hand, stopping me, “Having to avoid telling her that you took off this morning. That was fun. I didn’t want to lie to her so I avoided it as long as I could. But that could only last so long...it’s a good thing you called her when you did. I had been hoping I’d be kept out of that little episode.”
I smiled slightly at him, “She’ll get over it soon, then she’ll just be mad at me. I’m sure you’ll hear all about it...”
He sighed, “She has a way to piss people off and then make them feel bad...”
I grinned, “Or both at the same time. It can get really interesting sometimes...where you just want to smack her and kiss her...or hug her...as the case may be.”
He shook his head, “Is it the same with the others?”
I nodded, “Yes. You have no idea how many times they use that to their advantage...Kitty’s the best at it, because she has those innocent eyes and since she’s the youngest...well...” I shrugged.
He shook his head, “How did I get mixed up with you people...”
